Chapter Twelve

Conor

We’re all up and at the job site early the next morning, working out the nervous energy, waiting to see Gina. We haven’t said much to each other beyond basic pleasantries, and it’s clear to me that we’re all very much on edge.

But as the rest of the crew arrives, followed by our friends, our impatience becomes more and more palpable. Finally, Noah breaks. I hear him ask Keenan if he knows where Gina is today, and Keenan nods.

“Yeah, she texted Delia that she wasn’t feeling well, she’s not going to be here today.”

It feels like someone dropped a lead weight in my stomach. I guess the second the hormones wore off, the walls slammed back up and she was back to playing the Ice Queen.

No. I’m not going to let that happen, I think.

I’ve seen the truth, and I’m not playing her little game of cat and mouse anymore. That girl is mine.

Well, maybe not just mine. I can stand to share her with my brothers, though. What I can’t stand is the thought of letting her get away.

The day drags on like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I bust my ass, throwing myself fully into the work, trying to burn off the ugly emotions churning in my gut. Every time I look at the clock, my mood darkens.

I feel like a caged animal. All I want to do is hunt down Gina and confront her. Or bury my cock in her again. Maybe both. But I’m trying to maintain at least some impression of normalcy, so instead, I bury those feelings.

Finally, mercifully, the clock strikes quitting time. Part of my brain nags that I should wait for the others, but I feel like a bullet fired from a gun, off like a shot to Gina’s, and next thing I know, I’m pounding on her door.

I can hear music playing from within and after a moment, it pauses. A few seconds later, the door opens and Gina opens it slowly. She’s wearing a floral-patterned robe, and if I’m right, it looks like nothing else.

“Conor. Look, now’s not a good time-”

“Don’t give me that crap, Gina,” I say bluntly, “You took off yesterday without a word, then you didn’t show up today, you don’t get to hide forever.”

Anger flashes across her face.

“And you don’t get to show up at my house and harass me just because I bruised your ego,” she shoots back.

“So what, you’re just going to flake out on the dude ranch now?”

Her eyes narrow and her face flushes with fury.

“I never said-” she takes a deep breath and I can practically see her counting to ten to calm down,

I don’t know why I’m antagonizing her like this. It’s more than a little counter-productive, but I can’t stop myself. I’m frustrated, and confused by her actions.

“You’re running scared from us because you bit off more than you could chew, and now you’re going to hide away in your shop and leave the rest of us to do the dirty work.
